The Mediterranean Sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean. The Mediterranean Sea has an average depth of 1,500 m. The sea was an important route for merchants and travelers of ancient times, facilitating trade and cultural exchange between people of the region. It covers an area of about 2,500,000 km2.
